I spent my first 15 years in the Media Business. Fast paced, fun, and stressful. I had 3 kiddos within that career, which added to the stress. I was told I needed back surgery the summer of 2014, at age 38. I couldn't believe it. A Neurologist and an Orthopedic surgeons both told me to relieve the intense back pain, atrophying muscles and numbness I was experiencing down my right arm, (so much that I was literally losing my grip in my right hand) I needed ACDF (Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) which is a surgical procedure to treat nerve root or spinal cord compression by decompressing the spinal cord and nerve roots of the cervical spine with a discectomy in order to stabilize the vertebrae. Degenerative Disc Disease can be hereditary or due to an accident, but as my Father has the same (much more severe) in his low back I will just blame it on my genes.
In the meantime, I was told, I could get steroid injections into my spine to reduce inflammation in the area, but only 2 per year. I had 2 that year. And they are scary. You are put under to make sure you don't move during injection and cause paralysis. The injections did relieve the pain, but it never fully went away. Then I went to a 3rd doctor for a 3rd opinion. He told me if I wasn't fully behind this treatment plan, I should try some physical therapy and try to build muscle support back around the spot to relieve some of the pain.
I cried. I didn't believe it could be an option. But I went. And I got a very holistic minded special therapist who talked to me about diet and other sources of inflammation. My undergraduate degree in Biology and lots of that Health Science, I began my own treatment plan. Coincidentally, I had just begun a program to become a certified Holistic Health Coach through IIN. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I learned from Dr. Andrew Weil, Integrative Medicine Doctor, then Dr. Hyman, Functional Medicine Doctor and realized I could try eating an anti-inflammatory diet as a holistic treatment. I started on my journey and guess what? After 2 months of eating this way, my body had changed, and I could no longer feel the intense pain! It was truly a miracle and really what proved that FOOD IS MEDICINE! I graduated from IIN, and love coaching others to dig deeper and go outside the box to find their personal wellness solutions. The founder of IIN Joshua Rosenthal said all through the course, "When given half a chance the body can heal itself, by itself". That is what I am living proof of.
