Supporting Caregivers for Cognitive Decline
Caring for someone with cognitive decline is a marathon of trust that can super-charge empathic skills. As well as helping you to focus on that positive goal, as a Nightingale Dementia Consultant I can provide practical guidance for managing your loved one's changing behaviors.

Panic-Be-Gone
It is not fair, but when we find ourselves narrowly escaping danger, the subconscious mind tends to believe that the waking mind was not paying enough attention. Intruding more and more into our waking lives, it restlessly scans for threats, and uses panic as the universal method for ensuring our safety. This is a frustration to the waking mind, which sees the benefits lost when we cannot get into an elevator or airplane. In these sessions, we will engage the subconscious to sell the benefits of calm, explain how you will avoid future danger, and establish an agreement to consult the waking mind before running off into panic.

About me

Having the privilege of working for most of my life in technology, I was sufficiently sensitive to realize that 9/11 had triggered an unraveling of the social contract. An empath by nature, I concluded that technology was a driver of that change, and that people needed help to restore trust in their personal and social relationships. Hypnotherapy was the most direct route to that end.

I was fortunate to study at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, CA. Hypnosis is a tool, but to use it for therapy demands an orientation to personal development and the powers of the mind. Dr. Kappas, the founder of HMI, treated thousands of clients from all walks of life, and developed ways of talking about our struggles that are simple to explain and understand. I have refined and extended those views, bringing perspectives that guide clients away from grief, submission, and outrage and toward hope, action, and passion.

Along with the insights of Dr. Kappas, I am a student of Milton Erickson, who experienced trance as a shared experience. As did Dr. Erickson, I have faced choices in my life that enable me to confront darkness without fear, and guide clients toward the healing powers that reside in each of us.

My Philosophy of Care

Hypnotherapists fall into three categories: authoritarian, academic, and collaborative. As the third type of practitioner, I help my clients achieve a state called "trance" that liberates the wisdom and creativity of the united mind. In that state, clients discover possibilities that empower them to lead productive and fulfilled lives.

In guiding this journey, I draw upon lifetime of reading in psychology and spirituality. I do not hack the subconscious - I will help you to befriend it.

What You Can Expect On Your First Visit

The first session begins with "How can I help?" As you unburden your heart, the most common reaction is "You're hearing me." Next we will identify the strengths and steps to restore mental and emotional well-being. Then I will encourage your subconscious to reveal itself in trance. We'll celebrate its support in bringing you thus far. The first steps of therapy will follow, leaving you connected and refreshed. With renewed trust, you'll find your subconscious eager to return the next week.

My Inspiration

When I was sixteen, I placed love at the center of my intellectual universe, and harnessed the intellectual strengths of a Ph.D. physicist to organize everything around it. My conclusion, at the end of my sixth decade, was that love was the most powerful force in the universe, and that the human gift - after three billion years of Darwinian evolution - is to anchor love to the world. Those insights brought me to hypnotherapy.

Questions & Answers

When we suffer a trauma - which can be as mild as your best friend moving away - the conscious, social mind motors on while the subconscious tries to heal. Most of that work is done in dreams at night, and if an answer isn't found, the repeated mulling-over of the wound creates a partial identity that doesn't age with the rest of us. Its needs manifest in unexplained fears and resistance to change. In hypnosis, inner child work allows us to contact and heal that orphaned portion of the self. One of the greatest benefits is recovery of child-like joy and enthusiasm that was lost in the initial trauma.

At about eight, your mind divides into two parts: the subconscious, survival brain is 90%, and the conscious, social brain is 10%. Because we depend upon each other to survive, there is a link. The split exists to protect us from those that would exploit us. They make promises that they never intend to keep, and leave us lying in the gutter when they get what they want. To prevent that, the subconscious decides whether to support or social ambitions during dreams each night. When it withdraws support, the side-effects can include depression, irritability, and anxiety that undermine our relationships, and actual physical illness. The division also prevents us from bringing all of our resources to bear to accomplish our daily goals. Hypnotherapy facilitates the dialog between the two parts of the mind, enabling the two parts of the mind to communicate their needs and agree upon a sustainable course of action. From this, you might guess that hypnotherapy can improve every aspect of your life.

The first step here is always to ensure that you are not being exposed to a toxin. A dermatologist, functional medicine specialist, or Doctor of Osteopathy should be consulted. A hidden factor in chronic dermatitis can be mental anxiety that undermines the natural recovery of the skin. In such cases, symptoms may persist long after exposure and recur under minor irritation. From the perspective of a hypnotherapist, conditions on the head relate to feeling trapped or unable to express a deeply held truth. If that resonates with your situation, a skilled hypnotherapist can help you uncover the specifics and unite the mind in developing a positive resolution.
