Learn More About Carrie Weitzel, RDN

About me

I specialize in working with adults who want to reduce their need for blood pressure, cholesterol, and/or diabetes medications. I have personally struggled with weight myself due to PCOS and also have an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome because of this diagnosis. So you can bet that I am staying up to date on the most current nutrition research to improve my chances of keeping myself healthy. Let me help you do the same!

My Philosophy of Care

For those who are looking to reduce their need for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes medication, I offer a 5-month guided program (10 visits total) called the MEDication Freedom Method. For all of my patients, I follow Mediterranean diet guidelines for an overall balanced approach. I also not only look at nutrition, but the patient as a whole - stress, sleep routine, exercise, and medication side effects - to really get down to the root cause.

What You Can Expect On Your First Visit

Whether you are going through the MEDication Freedom Method or just a one-on-one appointment with me for another nutrition concern, we will go through a full health assessment and help you set smaller goals to help you reach your overall goal. With the MEDication Freedom Method, you'll receive personalized handouts as well with each visit. Within a few days after meeting with me, you'll also receive a nutrition summary via email with the main points we've discussed during our time together.

My Inspiration

My love for food and desire to help others inspired me to become a dietitian. Before establishing my practice in 2016, I have worked as a RDN at an inpatient psychiatric hospital, acute care hospital, and an outpatient diabetes clinic helping adults develop healthy lifestyle changes to combat metabolic syndrome.

Questions & Answers
Carrie Weitzel, RDN Answers
Remove yourself from any distractions by sitting at a table, turning off the TV. You can also put your eating utensil down in between bites. Focus on thoroughly chewing your food and swallowing it before preparing your next bite. A fun activity you can do to practice is taking a snack and as you eat each bite, write down the tastes, textures, smells (any other descriptions) that you are experiencing. Think of it as if you were taste testing a new product.

The MIND diet is a combination of Mediterranean and DASH diets. It focuses on a balance of healthy eating along with increasing antioxidant consumption and less sodium intake. It has been shown in preliminary research as well to delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Non-perishable items like nuts (preportion them so you don't accidentally overdo it), nut butters, clementines, apples, popped popcorn from home (over the stove, not the bagged kind), Larabars. Have a combo of protein + carbohydrates to help keep your blood sugar stable and keep you satisfied until your next meal.
