I am grateful to have had a very rich and unique life. I have had the good fortune of experiencing a wide range of professional opportunities in the fields of art, music, computer programming, technical writing, and of course, psychology.
When I was 19 years old, I suffered a severe trauma. I sought out several therapists, and finally found one with whom I felt safe. I became in awe of the therapeutic processes, watching myself change things that I never thought I could. And quite honestly, I thought it looked pretty easy to be a therapist. You just sit in a chair and say smart things! I was disillusioned by my experience in the corporate world and wanted to find another career that felt more meaningful to me. I tried a few psychology courses, and was fascinated. I entered a graduate program where I learned that working with people gave me that sense of fulfillment that I so dearly wanted. One thing that my education and experience has taught me is that being a therapist is not so easy. My therapist made it look so, as any expert in any field can do. It requires study, hard work, a constantly focused mind, and a lot of introspection. That said, I find that the appropriate use of humor and playfulness to be invaluable in healing.
I never ask, but they keep coming back!
I do my best to explain the logistics of therapy, and outline the various kinds of therapy available through my practice. I emphasize that the work is collaborative, for example, the patient and I work to create a feeling of safety, and decide on what kinds of approaches to use.
