I am a health coach, biologist, outdoor enthusiast, and dog mom! These interests and talents come together in a unique way to guide me to be an empathetic health coach that can help my clients obtain their desired health and wellness.
I began my own health journey after exposure to mold. I was living a life connected to nature with a great job working as a fish biologist in Alaska. I lived in a wonderful community, had a loving husband and lots of friends. But my health struggles had me feeling stressed out, reactive, fatigued, and unhappy. I worked hard to find answers but eventually decided to move to a sunnier climate to better address my health.
My husband’s and my love for surf and our connection to Hawaii took us to Honolulu to start this new chapter in our lives. The move and my learning from my own health journey brought me to a second career as a functional health coach.
From my health coach training, I not only developed the skills to become an effective health coach, but also to become a better human being. Through training in empathetic communication, and coaching, I learned how to finally listen to people! A skill I now use daily with friends, family, and co-workers. I also discovered many tools to help my clients and myself manage stress and to live a more optimistic, happy life. And most of all I learned that my job was not to tell my clients what to do, but instead to recognize they are the expert of their own lives. Instead, my health coaching skills were to be used to evoke from them their needs, desires and motivations and to guide them to their own ways to reach their goals.
With my 20 years of thinking like a biologist, I landed on a health and wellness philosophy that aligns with human biology—eat nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods, get outside, move like your ancestors, and connect with your “tribe”. These ideas not only make logical sense, but they are also backed by sound science and research. When my clients desire, I am able to help them find information that can provide them direction while allowing them to determine how to apply this knowledge to their life.
Health coaching grounds me and brings balance. Both me and my clients learn and are energized from our sessions. I carry this learning with me each day to live a happy, healthy, optimistic life. Living in Southeast Alaska, my body and mind were stressed from mold exposure and a lack of sunshine. I developed a host of symptoms, including digestive issues, chemical sensitivities, brain fog, and fatigue. Fortunately, I was able to use my critical thinking skills and perseverance to sift through information to find answers and doctors that could help me get to the root of my health issues.
During this process, I often felt stressed, alone, and overwhelmed. I was inspired to become a health coach to help others find their way in their journey. Through my training program, I developed coaching skills and knowledge in mindfulness, empathetic communication, and functional health. I developed the abilities to not only be an effective coach, but also to live life as a more optimistic, grateful person.
Now as a health coach, I am able to give others that much needed support. As I mindfully listen to my clients, I am able to truly hear their needs and desires. From this, we are able to forge a path forward together to meet their goals and live their life as their best self.
After the first health coaching session, my clients feel energized and hopeful that they can move past their current obstacles towards a brighter future for themselves. They feel they have been heard and supported, giving them the confidence and accountability to begin to make lifestyle changes towards their desired future.
The first health coaching session is dedicated to clarifying my client’s vision for their health and wellness. As the coach, I listen carefully and empathetically to my client and evoke from them their needs and desires to help them create a vision for their future. We work together to find a vision that connects them to their values and where they want to be. As they start to verbalize this positive future, they feel more motivated to work towards goals that now have meaning and can help them to make their vision a reality.
Health coaching works! You may feel that you have been unsuccessful with making lifestyle changes in the past. However, with a health coach by your side you will find the confidence and motivation to meet your goals.
As a health coach, I recognize that you are the most knowledgeable person of your body! When I partner with you, I bring my knowledge in health, behavior change, and motivation. When this expertise is combined with your knowledge of you, then we can co-create goals based on your values and needs. I can then help you outline manageable action steps to meet these goals. Through this process you will be supported no matter where you are at, and you will become empowered to become a better you!
