Never underestimate the power of belief.
For most of my life, I pretty much ignored the importance of taking care of my own body. I actually HATED the idea of exercise or sports and LOATHED the thought of having to control my colossal appetite. Growing up, I would often be bullied and ridiculed for my body. I would hear words like “You are fat and ugly! You are so weak and pathetic!” It was a very painful experience and one that brought me much hidden shame. I tried to discard the importance of my body and instead sharply focused on developing my intellectual and relational abilities.
Around January of 2011, a major turning point occurred. There was a man who had a name that was pretty similar to mine that I looked up to (and still do). He was intelligent and had great relational skills. He was also incredibly strong, capable of doing one-arm chin-ups. After witnessing him wrestle and dominate a couple of guys, I expressed how much in awe I was of his strength. Unexpectedly, he turned things around and talked about my large body frame and how my potential for strength and power was even higher than his. For the first time in my life, someone believed in me rather than criticized my body. I was inspired to see how strong and fit I could become and I was fortunate enough to also have friends who were nuts about weightlifting and bodybuilding. With their support, encouragement, and help I finally began my journey in fitness. Working as a personal trainer, I am excited to have the opportunity now to encourage, support, and inspire others to take care of their body.
