What does “I am being healthy” mean to you?
Kathleen discovered her need for it when she began practicing yoga in 1973. At that time she was in a high pressure position as an interior designer for the state of New York and she drank coffee and smoked cigarettes habitually. It was the yoga training that led her to quit these bad habits and gain peace of mind and in her life. In 1989 she began her Reiki training and then her Integral Yoga teacher training. Both of these were considered strange and out of the norm at that time. But they seemed to be related, since one was preventative (yoga) and the other was restorative or healing (Reiki). Neither of these were approved of by her family so she was really stepping out onto thin ice. She was accused of promoting other religions, or worse yet, doing the work of the devil. Thankfully it is now proven to be a total misconception and both of these modalities are now very much mainstream.
In 2001, Kathleen become a Reiki Master (Shihan) of Gendai Reiki Ho. This system is part of the Gakkai, the original Japanese healing society, founded by Usui Mikao in 1922 shortly after his enlightenment experience. Although he is the originator of Reiki, he only survived four years after creating this society, so much of the training was created by his successors. Although they did keep his teachings intact which include exercises for students to increase or shift their own energy, only those in this society know this part of the training. What most appeals to Kathleen about this system is that it is void of any of the controversial information about the history of Reiki that began when it came to the West in the early 1940’s. She combines this lineage with her Alliance lineage to create a very comprehensive system.
Yoga has also been through a lot of change since introduced to our society. While it started in India as a practice to allow the physical body to sit for long periods of time in meditation it has evolved into a physical exercise to be more acceptable to our Western world. It is now known to facilitate all the internal organs to work better, keep the body younger longer and develop concentration of the mind creating peace within. The flexibility factor, which prompts many a person who already has loose ligaments to become an instructor, since they can make the poses look easy and beautiful, the greater benefit is the strength of body and mind that results from regular practice. It is great in assisting joggers, since that activity shortens muscles. It strengthens the supporting system of the body, reduces joint inflammation due to poor diet and strengthens the joints such as the knees (also contributed to by jogging). Chiropractors give exercises to their patients these days and they also stem from yoga.
Integral Yoga will always be Kathleen’s first love when it comes to teaching and sharing the beautiful practice of yoga. Since it is a more spiritually based system that includes pranayama (breathing practices), asana (physical postures and eye exercises), shivasana (an extended deep relaxation), chanting and meditation it is more inclusive, supportive and expansive. She has added a number of testimonials to her explanation of it as they give an idea how her class is executed. Since this is one of the gentlest of yoga styles, it is suitable for any age or ability. Hence it is the one that she practices herself as her body is no longer in the youthful stage it was when she began doing yoga at age 23. Instructors in your area can be located on the website www.http://iyta.org/teachers-directory/ which is the Integral Yoga Teachers Association which she is a member of.
More recently Kathleen has added more complementary healing techniques for being healthy. She is now an Elite Diplomate, about to become a master, in B.E.S.T. or Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique. It was inspired by a chiropractor, Dr. M.T. Morter, Jr., an amazing man who passed away in 2013. He had been the president of two different Chiropractic colleges and was always questioning why some people “held” their adjustments while others did not. He was eventually given guidance in his dream state and would awaken with fresh ideas on how to utilize a technique he was developing (from Spirit) which allows the practitioner to use the innate intelligence of the person’s body to tap into the subconscious mind and discover limiting blocks and beliefs that can be shifted with correct and effective emotional focus, along with a few other aspects. What he discovered is a way for the client or patient to be an active participator and engage in the process of change which affects all levels of being. I personally have had miraculous changes happen with clients as their lives improve drastically.
Kathleen’s goal has remained the same; to help people live in health which is their birthright! Educating them in nutrition and the importance of staying alkaline, ways to release stress and take better care of themselves puts the burden of responsibility on them. After all, we are the creators of our reality and we are responsible for everything in our life. It is incredibly empowering when we take our power back.
“The body was created to survive” is a famous quote from the late Dr. M.T. Morter Jr., founder of B.E.S.T. Everyone needs to be educated as to what options we have for our own unique physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. But what if the body did more than survive but actually thrived? It is Kathleen’s intention to provide tools to assist and share information that will inspire people to want to claim “I am being healthy”!
