Kathy has been coaching me for a few months now on a variety of topics: problems in my relationship, childhood traumas, improving my communication skills, learning more about myself and who I am. I enjoy speaking with Kathy, not only does she listen to me but she also gives me important pieces of advice and practical exercises to do. It is a process to improve one self, it requires a lot of work, time and motivation, so having the right therapist/coach by your side is very important. I am glad Kathy is part of this journey with me, cheering me along the way. Would totally recommend her as a life coach.
I had no pain from two open heart surgeries, thanks to Kathy Gruver. I visited Kathy twice. She made certain hypnotic suggestions about surgery which she instructed me to repeat to myself every night for about five days. Following the surgery, I had pain only while in the ICU. Once I was moved to the step-down unit and through my full recovery I HAD NO PAIN! The surgeons, nurses and cardiologists were shocked. I didn't need a coughing pillow because coughing didn't hurt; laughing didn't hurt; I could sleep in a normal bed and walk easily. Three months later, the surgery was repeated, due to a defective valve. Again, no pain! It still amazes me. Hypnotherapy should be routinely recommended to patients prior to surgery.
I'd like to thank you for showing me two techniques that helped me tremendously for my pre and post surgery. The breathing in and out big breaths while saying in my head "Let it go I am ready" helped with the anxiety so much. I was very calm while I was being wheeled into the OR. When I woke up in recovery I held my thumb and middle finger together and concentrated on good feelings and places I love and I didn't get sick at all. Felt Great! A combo of both helped me to walk out of hospital 4 hours after my surgery and go home.

About me

Hey all. I am a coach and hypnotherapist. I have been involved in national health and human behavior for over 30 years. I started out as a massage therapist and then expanded my knowledge into other modalities such as Reiki, hypnosis and coaching. I also have my PhD in natural health and studied mind/body medicine at Harvard.
I currently operate out of Santa Barbara, California where I live with my long-term boyfriend and my cat Aleister. I love to help people clarify goals, remove blocks and partner with people to make their dreams come true. I love working with couples and teams as well as individuals. Some of my favorite things are working with values, identifying and maximizing ego states, teaching communication, mindfulness, mindset. I love helping people break down blocks or limiting beliefs that are holding them back from where they truly want to be. I've written 8 books, have lectured around the world including two TEDx talks and I would love to help you reach your full potential and live your best life!!!

My Philosophy of Care

Wow that's a tough one, as it was definitely not a straight path for me. My mother died when I was young with cancer and I'm sure that was part the motivation. Though I think it was more watching my father be such an incredible caregiver. I very accidentally apprenticed as a massage therapist in college when I was a theatre major so when I made the journey cross country to Hollywood I figured it would be a great sideline to all the award-winning film roles. The film roles never came but the massage and healing stayed with me. I have since added to that Reiki, herbs, mind body medicine, stress reduction, hypnotherapy and now coaching. I am also the offer of eight books and an international speaker having appeared on stages over 250 times worldwide. To me all of my outlets, the speaking, the writing and in person sessions allow me to fulfill my calling, which is helping people heal, recognize the options they have before them, and inspiring people to reach their ultimate potential.

What You Can Expect On Your First Visit

My first hypnotherapy appointment is about 35 minutes of talking to get to the true root cause of the issue and the rest of the session is done in the hypnotic state. This follows a 15 minute get to know you phone call.
My first coaching session follows a 15 minute discovery called and the client filling out a rather extensive information form that we will cover. We will form our alliance of how we are going to work together, do a few get to know you exercises, put together a working plan to allow the client to get to where they want to go and take it from there.

My Inspiration

As well as a coach, hypnosis is one of my other offerings. There are a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis. One of the big ones is that you can get trapped in hypnosis and be made to do things against your will. Hypnosis is actually a very alert state, you will hear everything that is said to you. There is no way for you to get trapped in the state or be completely at the will of someone else. We often reference the people dragged on stage at the state fair, made to do silly things during the stage hypnosis show. Rest assured that is not what we do in a clinical setting and those people are not doing anything that they wouldn't do out of hypnosis. Hypnosis is great at getting deep to the subconscious to help break the pattern such as smoking, fears and phobias or anxieties. My main focus with Hypnosis is pre-surgery programming the body to heal quicker and and it's most optimal way.

Questions & Answers

Kathy Gruver, PhD, Cht Answers
A very common issue, Jonathan, thanks for the question. My favorite tool for this when I'm coaching someone with this issue is to use ego state work. We identify the parts of ourselves and tap in to the one that has the social strength, your inner extrovert. We empower that part to take over when needed and anchor that in. It's an amazing technique and can be used for so many issues.
Kathy Gruver, PhD, Cht Answers
yes, most definitely. This is actually what I see most of my clients for. The mind is incredibly powerful and we can program it to help with fear and anxiety, pain management, recovery time and expectations of healing. It's one of the most powerful tools I've used to help people through their surgery, everything from breast reconstruction to open heart surgery (twice) to knee and hip replacement. It's great for post-op as well.

Absolutely! This is a common reason people seek out PLR. I've seen it improve relationships, help with chronic illnesses and pain, explain patterns, habits and thought blocks. And even if you don't believe in PLR, I've seen it still work. I do a lot of work in this arena and would love to help you explore when you're ready.

A few years back I had an anterior/posterior spinal fusion at L4-L5. I was an active young man of 45 years old and was petrified of surgery. My wife suggested that I try hypnosis, which is something I had never tried before. To say the least, I was skeptical. I saw Dr. Kathy Gruver prior to my surgery for hypnosis treatments that not only eased my nerves, it helped my body with the pains involved in the recovery process of this life-changing surgery. I highly recommend these hypnosis sessions as they guided my recovery. Her knowledge of the human mind and body is one that I will be forever grateful for.
My surgeon is impressed with how well I’m doing. My sensation of healing (pain level) is only at 1.5. My surgeon says everyone should have hypnosis before surgery. (following 2 breast reconstruction surgeries)
Kathy helped me enormously in recovering quickly from a recent TKR. The surgery was scheduled during a busy time, and I needed to return to work as soon as possible. I knew the surgery could be quite painful, and I didn’t want to require narcotic medication post-op because it would dull my cognitive functioning. Kathy hypnotized me in advance of the operation to help me focus on the sensations of healing from surgery rather than feelings of pain. The hypnosis helped pre-program my mind to embrace recovery. I required no prescription medication for pain management and returned to work quickly. I highly recommend Kathy’s hypnosis services to aid other patients in speedy recovery while limiting the need for prescription pain killers.
My experience in hypnotherapy with Dr. Gruver has been phenomenal. I initially sought her services for problems with anxiety on various levels, and I was genuinely surprised at how effective her hypnotherapy methods were, and in such a short period of time. I'm a tough case, admittedly, and as a hypnotherapy newbie, I was skeptical that I could overcome some fairly serious issues. But Dr. Gruver is a consummate pro and the change I've experienced in controlling my own thoughts and behaviors is amazing. She's fantastic at what she does and continuously enhances her own skill set as a therapist and healing practitioner to better serve clients. I can't thank her enough.
It was time to control my anxiety about driving outside my limited comfort zone. I avoided driving distances because I might begin to panic and the risk involved to determine if I would panic was too great. In order to face my situation I choose hypnotherapy with Dr. Gruver. After the initial discussion, she identified what may be causing my anxiety but more importantly was able to assure me that I was capable of controlling the anxiety myself. We accomplished this with hypnotherapy which included relaxation techniques and imagery, and positive talk reinforcement. I since had to take a lengthy road trip and was amazed that I was comfortable driving for the entire duration of the trip. It was a true sense of freedom.
My experience with Kathy stayed with me long after our session. With her assistance I was able to visualize a lot of images and experiences to help me navigate towards attaining my goals. Using the imagery and the tools Kathy gave me I was successful redirecting myself to stay focused and calm in several scenarios following our time together.
Dr. Gruver's custom visualization was extraordinary, just perfect for my needs. She knew just what to say and has a true talent for guided visualizations. I've tried a number of similar recordings to deal with anxiety and stress before, but Dr. Gruver's was far more effective. I love it!
Kathy has an innate ability to really deepen the mind-body connect and coached me safely through 'deep water'. She skillfully took me into the experience of my body, which led to a huge shift for me. She has an innate ability to create instant trust and safety allowing me to go deeper in such a short period of time. She is a coach that gets right to the heart. I highly recommend Kathy!
Kathy helped me see fresh perspectives to get me going in a new (and better) direction in my life. I love her coaching style - she brings so much energy, challenges me, and throws out exercises to help me see things in a new light!
Kathy Gruver is a no-nonsense, yet compassionate, coach that held space for me and helped me to identify what I truly wanted and how to align my values with how I am showing up in the world. She challenged current perspectives that were no longer serving me and offered accountability and support for actions to shift those perspectives going forward. Kathy’s experience in a multitude of healing therapies provides versatility in her approach and the tools that she drew upon to create resonance during our coaching session. Her positive energy and enthusiasm for life exudes from every cell.
Kathy has already helped me so much in the first few coaching sessions that I’ve had with her. I’ve previously seen a few different therapists and all they did was validate my feelings. Kathy actually asks you the right questions to get to the bottom of how you're feeling or why you’re behaving a certain way. She gives you the tools that you need to deal with whatever situation you're in. If you do the work she gives you, you will be on track to a healthier life and a better you!
Kathy has been great. She is versatile and trained in many disciplines. From the start, she has been willing to work with my needs and take the work where it needed to go by listening, learning, and asking questions. She is an intellectual, which I like, but she is also emotionally centered and intuitive; a great combination. She has a wonderful attitude and brings positivity to all areas of her work. Perhaps some of our success comes from how well our personalities jive, but at the very least I can assure you she is talented, dedicated, knowledgeable, professional, and competent.
Kathy has really helped me get INTO ACTION to accomplish my goals -- in a way that feels GREAT for me! I've been stressed out about growing my business and procrastinating for a long time. Certain tasks (recreating a website I love) felt like herculean efforts and I didn't know how to start. Kathy has helped me get in touch with my values and a vision for what I REALLY want, and has helped me break down my tasks into bite sized actions that are fun and achievable for me. I've spent much more time actually doing things that are important to me, than in the past where I've spent time stressing about the giant tasks I wasn't sure how to start. Kathy supports me in simultaneously dreaming big and being practical. If you're looking for a coach that will support you in accomplishing your dreams while staying in flow, look no further than Kathy Gruver.
