Therapy for Individuals Couples, & Families
Welcome to Lighthouse Counseling Services, we are glad you are here. We understand the importance of finding the right therapist to meet your needs and would like to help you however we can. Lighthouse Counseling Services is a private practice of Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. What that means is that we think of people in their relationships...marriages, families, work places, schools, communities. Relationships in these contexts can be difficult at times. Sometimes communication breaks down because the available tools of communication have failed. Sometimes depression, anxiety, anger or addictions cause personal and relational lives to become unmanageable. We believe change is possible in individuals, couples and families. Our commitment to you is to journey with you in the process of discovering and living into a healthy, productive life.
DAVID MACKINNON, Ph.D., M.B.A., LMFT
In 2005, David founded Lighthouse Counseling Services LLC to serve the psychotherapeutic needs of individuals, couples and families in the northern Illinois area. He wanted to create a safe place for people to address and resolve the issues that hindered their ability to live life abundantly. David specializes in working with couples struggling with trust and communications difficulties arising from issues that include infidelity, parenting, finances, intimacy, addiction, work/family balance, depression and anxiety. He also works with individuals suffering from a variety of issues which impede personal and relational growth and happiness. Lastly, David works with families, mostly families with adolescents, to facilitate communication, understanding and functionality.
Relationships are hard work. Misunderstanding, miscommunication and disagreements are a part of normal, healthy relationships. What we do with misunderstandings, miscommunications and disagreements define the quality of the relationship. David helps his clients discover and/or create the communication patterns necessary to navigate relationship struggles.
Prior to establishing Lighthouse Counseling, David was a marriage and family therapist with Heritage Professional Associates Ltd., Hinsdale IL from 1995 until 2005.
David completed a Masters degree in marriage and family therapy at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA in 1992. He then completed a Doctorate in marriage and family therapy at Purdue University in 1998. In 2014, David completed 100 hours of training in clinical hypnosis which he incorporates into his work especially with respect to depression, anxiety and pain management. David is a Clincal Fellow with The American Assocation for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Illinois Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He am also a Clinical Member of The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Illinois.
Prior to his career in marriage and family therapy, David graduated from Northwestern University's J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management with an M.B.A. Following graduation in 1979, he joined Bank of America NT & SA in Chicago, IL. During his 11-year corporate career, he served the bank domestically (Chicago, IL) and internationally (Japan and Malaysia) as both a line officer and manager. His last title was Vice President and Senior Credit Officer.
David brings together the heart and insight of a family counselor and the skills and knowledge of a corporate manager. The blending of these two diverse areas brings a unique perspective to his counseling.
MEGAN MACKINNON, M.S., LMFT
Megan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and joined her father, Dr. David Mackinnon, at Lighthouse Counseling Services in July of 2011. She works with couples, co-parents, families, and individuals helping them improve their lives and relationships. She received her Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Arts completed prior to that in American Sign Language Interpreting at Columbia College Chicago. Megan is a clinical fellow with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
Megan has a passion for working with adult couples and co-parents, as well as families, and individuals (adolescents and adults). She believes and subscribes to the idea that ‘no man is an island’. We all exist within the context of relationships - with our family members, friends, coworkers, classmates, and even strangers. At times, our relationships challenge us and we find ourselves needing some help to improve them. Megan aims to help her clients strengthen their relationships through improving their communication skills, being able to more clearly identify their own discomfort or upset feelings, and increasing awareness of and improving their relationship patterns.
Megan's goal is to meet her clients as they are and to validate their experiences with a non-judgmental and affirming approach. Often times clients come in feeling unsupported and unsure of how to address what challenges them. She helps her clients identify their therapeutic goals, and assist in their growth with compassion and empathy. Her hope is that when her clients are finished with their therapeutic work they are not only better equipped to improve and maintain their relationships but also have a positive and more centered sense of self.
Megan's clinical specialties include:
