Learn More About Ginger Harris M.Ac., L. Ac.

About me

I'm a Chinese medicine and reiki practitioner with background in visual art and anthropology. A 2008 graduate of Maryland University of Integrative Health (formerly Tai Sophia Institute), I hold a Master’s degree in Acupuncture. I am licensed by the CT Dept. of Health to practice acupuncture and nationally board-certified by the NCCAOM. I started my private practice, Ginger Harris Acupuncture and Healing Arts, in 2012, located in Granby, CT.
A CT native, I grew up with a deep appreciation for the natural world, spending much time outdoors nurturing early interests in plants, animals, and native peoples. Early adulthood found me delving into healing and martial arts, gaining practices in meditation and reiki, studying the medicinal traditions of various indigenous cultures, and further restoring my own health through diet & nutrition and receiving regular acupuncture. A lifelong artist with a BA in Studio Art and Anthropology (Connecticut College), I ran a Therapeutic Arts Program while living in New Mexico and have extensive experience teaching and making art.

My Philosophy of Care

As with many health and wellness professionals, my own personal healing journey and deep investigation of my family's patterns of imbalance gave me a strong foundation in wellbeing and inspired a desire to provide that for others. The individual empowerment that I found comes with true healing and recovery is crucial for building community and global wellness - this vision is a strong motivator for me. Starting out as an artist taught me about the power of attention and focus - this same concept is employed in assisting a person to restore themselves to greater wholeness and integrity. My first acupuncturist was a huge influence in my decision to study Chinese medicine and become a practitioner myself. I resonated strongly with her relentless curiosity, dedication to community, and multifaceted holistic approach to assisting her clients. (Plus, she had the coolest apothecary - jars of all kinds of herbs and mysterious, exotic-looking ingredients!) She was caring, passionate, and present as we partnered to bring out a fuller and more balanced version of myself. I was already doing this to some degree with my Therapeutic Art students but I wanted to do more. I also found inspiration through my studies of various other cultures and their healing approaches that had evolved over thousands of years. I felt that this wisdom could balance out what was being offered by conventional Western allopathic medicine. So this choice to become a wellness professional is my compassionate response to the suffering I see in the world. It's a way to shine a light on paths to creating a world with more joy and beauty, less limitation and suffering.

What You Can Expect On Your First Visit

Comfortable, safe, relaxing, informative. Folks tend to feel calm and relaxed immediately after their first session, reporting further effects within the days following treatment. If it's their first experience with acupuncture, they are surprised by how painless it is. They love that I am thorough, present, listening deeply, and happy to answer their questions.

My Inspiration

Acupuncture is a very safe, minimally invasive modality that has been practiced and refined over several thousand years. It can be applied in the treatment of nearly any condition, as it is a holistic form of medicine (aims to balance and restore the whole person by getting at root causes rather than just alleviating symptoms). Most people feel no pain or a fleeting pinch as needles are gently inserted and feel pleasantly relaxed after their session. Overall benefits include stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest"), improved circulation, and reduction of inflammation. Many report improvements in their sleep, digestion, elimination, and general outlook even when those were not the main concerns that brought them to treatment. Although there is a wide variety in style and personal approach, Acupuncturists are thoroughly trained, with a master's degree at minimum. We use sterile, single-use stainless steel needles. I'm happy to answer any further questions you might have!
