Heidi has been a wonderful support for both myself and my kids through these trying times. I'm impressed with how quickly my kids connected with her, and I'm grateful for all that she's done for us.
I've attended a few of the group sessions of art therapy that Heidi has led. Two multiple week ones, and one single night event. They have been helpful for me dealing with things in a new way compared to other therapy I use, and it's enlightening and amazing how much one can get from making something. She's compassionate, caring, and professional.
Heidi has been working with my artsy teen and she is the first therapist that my kiddo is excited to engage with. Heidi’s insights and gentle active listening has allowed for some very deep discussions during the non threatening process of creating art. So pleased and relieved that my teen has an outlet.

Learn More About Heidi Pedersen

About me

I'm passionate about the arts, and embrace opportunities for growth and development. Eco/ nature based materials are a personal favorite, as they go hand-in-hand with the mindfulness techniques of art therapy.

My Philosophy of Care

Art is an extension of self: we meet ourselves through the creative process. An art therapist walks alongside, illuminating the path and offering new ways of seeing things. We use art as part of a self-reflective process, which offers opportunities for experimenting with new materials, creative problem solving, increasing self-esteem, self-mastery, and social connection.

What You Can Expect On Your First Visit

In our first session we will talk about your goals- what you want to work on. We will discuss art materials: what you're comfortable with and have on hand, and what you'd like to try. We will do a small ice-breaker activity, and discuss what you see in the art. Even if all you can draw is stick men, it doesn't matter. It's about the process of creating, not about the end result.
"There are no mistakes in art," as Bob Ross would say. You are present in the art, and you are not a mistake.

My Inspiration

Growing up, my friends and I would talk about our dreams from the night before. We would share all the weird and unusual things that happened in them, all the symbols, and it made me wonder if there was something more going on within those dreams. Art Therapy is about learning our own symbolic language, so we can better understand ourselves.

Questions & Answers

Heidi Pedersen Answers
It's possible to ground yourself wherever you are, using a variety of different techniques. What's important is how it feels for you. In Art Therapy we quite often use earth based materials and the mere process of holding them in your hand can be very grounding. If you would like to use pink marble, I would encourage you to do so. Having your feet planted in a comfortable way, taking deep breaths in and clearing your mind, feeling what connects you with the earth- that's what's most important.
