I grew up in mid-west, but have called Oregon home for 25 years. My work flows out of my calling to serve myself and other's in the endeavor to thrive and adapt to our lives. I am drawn to more and more gentle ways of working with the body, mind, and spirit. I have thrived as a outdoor athlete in primarily cycling and rock climbing. At that time of my life I appreciated body workers that knew that a deeper understanding of the body was more effective than just wringing out tight muscles. We go through life with it's traumas and dings, including all the ways we learned how to use our bodies shapes our human form and how it responds to our day to day life. Personally being in my body for fifty years I have seen how even parts of us can change through years of conditioning and wounding, but still regenerate and learn anew. It all begins in our awareness of ourselves and investigating why we hold tensions or continue to move in ways that no longer serve us. There is a option to release the victim quality of the wound and turn it around, to reconsider what can I do with this part of me now? To bring an energy of curiosity to a movement pattern (or lack of movement) can begin growth and eventually release the trauma/dysfunction.
My own inquisitiveness of happiness and health have led my life. I have always enjoyed observing the world through my eyes, hands, and body. I went to college in Omaha Nebraska majoring in the Fine Arts, and graduated with a BA in Education with a Therapeutic Recreation Degree. It was my version of an Art Therapy Degree.
Getting my first massage at 19 yrs of age it planted a seed, it wasn't until I did my Practical at the Oregon Rehabilitation Center that primarily served stroke and traumatic brain injury, that I had felt compelled to enroll in the local school for Massage Therapy after being so impressed working with a team of allied health professionals including physical therapist, occupational therapists, and respiratory therapists, neuro-psychologists and surgeons. Everything about this team was hands on and patient driven to make their lives whole again.
Personal attention, relaxing, effective, expansive, educational, empowering.
Have an open mind, research your options, most therapists are willing to work with beginners or those that have never had massage therapy. We are a creative crowd, so if working with all clothing on or hands off feet for instance, a good therapist will adapt the work for the individual. No pain no gain is not necessary, or even healing. We tend to want deep tissue because we can not feel or understand parts of our body so we want to dig out the problem area, probably why surgery is so popular. I have teach people that usually the "problem area" is not the only problem. There are always other parts of the body that are playing a role in the dysfunction. Digging out with deep tissue is only a temporary fix. I use deep work on an individual level and never compromise my own body comfort to help another.
