We have been going to Dr. Steve since we moved to California in 2007. He is the most effective chiropractor I have ever been to. About me

Dr. Ward specializes in acute and chronic pain, neuromuscular diseases, immune compromising conditions and learning disabilities. Dr. Ward looks at the cranium, spinal column and pelvis as a single intact unit. Standing and seated front-view and side-view full spine x-rays are recommended in severe pain patterns, work related injuries, automobile accidents and degenerative disease conditions. A system analysis consists of standing and seated front-view and side-view full spine x-rays. We can scientifically measure abnormal stress, and predict what specific damage it will cause if not corrected

The Father of Spinal Column Stressology

This website is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Lowell Ward, the founder of Spinal Column Stressology (SCS). He was

born in Columbus, Ohio on June 11, 1936. He graduated in 1960 from Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa. His primary interest was to develop different ways to objectively document chiropractic. Dr. Ward was also interested in the correlation between spinal curvature and human behavior. He developed a spinal blueprint which he used to study diseased conditions, mental/emotional behaviors and the impact of inherited behavior.

Aerospace Technology

Dr. Ward soon began working with Clint Fulkerson, Ph.D., chief aerospace engineer at Californias largest space-exploration firm. Dr. Fulkerson originally came to Dr. Ward as a patient, but soon became interested in the structural mechanisms of the intact spinal column. He gave Dr. Ward explicit advice: 1) develop methods that accurately measure the critical landmarks of spinal distortions/disorders; and 2) devise procedures to analyze progression. He and Dr. Ward developed a highly sophisticated system of spinal stress measurement, incorporating Dr. Selyes three-stage theory of stress response (alarm, resistance, and exhaustion).

The Meninges

Later on, Dr. Ward read the book Adverse Mechanical Tension in the Central Nervous System by Alf Breig M.D. Dr. Breigs book focused on the meninges, the tough, plastic-like coverings of the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. The meningeal fibers are anchored at the lower end by a tough ligament to the first segment of the tailbone. As a closed tube, the meninges constrict when stretched. Such meningeal stretching is capable of compressing the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. An important spinal column stabilizer, the meninges tense the spine to make it stronger during movement or postural extremes, thereby maintaining the bodys equilibrium. Dr.Breigs research helped explain how and why trauma to either the low back or the brain could affect the other and everything in between.

SCS Basic Premise

Dr. Wards basic premise was that the spinal column-pelvic-meningeal unit functions as a single, intact system. This system is designed to monitor, regulate and react and adapt to all internal and external stressors. This system provides a protective environment for the brain, spinal cord, and cranial and spinal nerves. Through the meninges the spinal meningeal system is able to tighten or elongate in response to movement or stress.

Dr. Steve is amazing! His ability to pin point my issues both physically and emotionally has been a lifesaver. I have learned so much about how my emotional health effects my physical health and his kind words and reassurance are always of great comfort to me! I first took my son (muscular dystrophy) to Ward Chiropractic in 1991. Dr. Steve got immediate, outstanding results with Garth. I have seen many other similar over the years. I don’t think there is anyone anywhere who gets better results with tough cases than Dr. Steve.
