Tierney Farry is a licensed professional counselor who works with individuals. couples and families. Tierney offers psychotherapy to teens and adults who are struggling with the demands of their lives, with experience treating relationship & intimacy issues, marriage and couples counseling, trauma, anxiety, depression, existential/spiritual crises, women’s issues/experiences of oppression, as well as the repercussions of dis-ease and stress on the body. She is interested in learning more about how to treat the mind, body, and spirit from physiological diseases and symptoms of auto-immunity. Regardless of the specific therapeutic issue, Tierney takes an individualized approach to treatment that is both directive and compassionate.
Tierney received her MA and advanced certificate in counseling from Montclair State University and completed her internship at Family Service League in 2013 where she trained in structural family therapy as well as gained extensive experience working with Post Traumatic Stress as a prevention coordinator and advocate with the Essex County Sexual Assault and Violence Education center. During her years in practice, Tierney has increasingly incorporated the concept of whole body wellness into the more traditional psychotherapy techniques. Motivated by a desire to understand how yoga impacts the release of emotion stored in the physical body ("the issues in our tissues"), Tierney completed a 200 hour yoga teacher certification in 2014. Inspired by her experience with yoga, Tierney takes an "integrative" approach to her patients' emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-being. While Tierney’s interventions are guided by her training in interpersonal/family systems work, she firmly believes it is essential to invite the client’s body into the conversation. When indicated, Tierney draws on her experience with Eastern philosophies and mind-body therapies to weave complementary approaches such as guided imagery, relaxation training, yoga philosophy, and mindfulness in the psychotherapy process to give clients more access to their innate self-regulatory systems.
In addition to psychotherapy, Tierney offers Wellness Consults including Therapeutic Yoga and Ayurvedic Consultations .
Practicing yoga with therapeutic intentions is vastly different than practicing non-specifically. Tierney offers private and semi-private therapeutic yoga sessions incorporating pranayama ( breathwork), meditation, and yoga asanas (movement based) targeting:
• Stress/Tension/Pain in the body
• Mood disorders such as anxiety and depression
• Issues related to food, eating and body image.
Tierney is also a Certified Ayurvedic Allied Health Professional with expertise in the integration of mind-body wellness and the psychology of self-nourishment. Tierney studied Ayurveda (“The Science of Life”) both in her Yoga Teacher Training, as well as more formally through the Chopra Center in 2015 under the tutelage of Drs Deepak Chopra and Sushas Ksirchsagar. In 2016, she completed an Allied Health Professionals and Wellness Educators Intensive with the Chambers Center for Wellbeing, under Drs Lonsdorf and Rothenberg.
Tierney’s understanding of whole body health is guided by the principle that there is no one “right approach” or magic solution to our modern ailments. The complexity of our society mimics the complexity of our struggles in both body and mind, and Tierney calls upon the wisdom of both modern Western science and traditional Eastern medicine to facilitate the natural healing of body-mind. With Ayurvedic proverb “when diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; when diet is correct, medicine is of no need” in hand, Tierney delights in helping clients to gain wisdom into their own unique nourishment needs and healing process, and to align their behaviors with their given right to wholeness and balanced living.
