I learned about the Alexander Technique during a meditation program about posture. I had always experienced a lot of tension, stress and anxiety even while meditating. When the Alexander Technique Teacher helped me with my posture, I felt a relaxed and open in a new way. I have tried many relaxation techniques. None of them worked for any significant length of time. I began taking lessons with Joseph Arnold to explore working with my body in a new way. He has helped me learn me how the ways I held and moved my body even while just sitting or walking created tension. I began to learn how to identify and let go of the body habits I had developed over years and how to let my body find it’s own natural postures for the various activities that are part of my daily life. This has eliminated much of the tension I had learned to accept as normal. It is a pleasure to work with Joseph. He is gentle and incredibly respectful of his students.
Joseph has been my teacher for some years now. At first, he helped my relieving acute pain while violon playing. Then, he taught me how to play, walk, sit, or workout with my entire body engaged harmoniously. I can now identify the causes of bad posture and correct them. I can identify the causes of muscle or joint pains from various situations: working, driving, typing, playing the violin, etc. And correct them, using simple and efficient tricks Joseph taught me. So now each session is a relaxing, inspiring and engaging moment. It goes far beyond playing and posture!!
A couple of years ago, I took weekly Alexander Technique Lessons with Joseph. He was very informative about the natural movements of the body and how to realize those movements. In addition to realizing physical movements, we also focused on the mental aspect of playing violin. He would remind me of things such as "try easier" instead of "try harder" all reaching toward the goal of "effortless mastery." He helped me grow my awareness outward to the entire room, how the sound fills the room, and being comfortable with the audience's presence to have a "flashlight focus." Rather than a "laser beam focus" where you only focus on the notes and are unaware of everything else. We would end each practice session laying on the floor while he lead a guided meditation. No matter how busy my day was before the lesson, I would always leave feeling more relaxed, content, and knowledgeable.

I was initially drawn to a workshop led by Joseph because the past year had been challenging in terms of injuries including a dislocated shoulder and back/hip/leg pain. I also believe that our bodies hold a tremendous amount of wisdom and truth and I wanted to tap into that. ​I had heard of the Alexander Technique, but I really did not know anything about it. My only hesitation was that it might not work for me. After attending the workshop and following up with private lessons with Joseph,​it was surprising to me to learn that I had been living in a way that treated my body as though it were disconnected parts. I was very surprised to experience how profoundly different I felt, thought, and moved when I was able to shift towards viewing my body as a whole. I most valued Joseph's ​ insight and ability to make these concepts concrete and practical. I have found that working with Joseph and the Alexander Technique are a supportive piece of the puzzle for anyone looking to access health and well being. I appreciated Joseph's approach in particular which is holistic and intuitive. He is a talented practitioner and has helped me uncover a tremendous resource in becoming freer in my movement.
Joseph is an extremely kind and generous teacher who cares deeply about his students and the issues they bring to him. His approach is always gentle and sensitive and he emphasizes an understanding of the whole-body and mind connection. Studying the Alexander Technique with Joseph has given me an understanding of myself that has transformed the way I think and use my body. In the beginning I was able to learn how to play my violin for longer and without neck and back pain. Soon lessons delved into understanding how to use my body in everyday activities. It is a glorious upward spiral of being able to identify stressors because of body awareness and being able to identify bodily tension because of stressors. Applying this concept to the major and mundane things in life can be tremendously instructive and freeing.
I have been working with Joseph Arnold for over three years. We aspire to meet every week, but given the demands on our schedules it is sometimes less frequent. He is an extremely gifted teacher of the Alexander technique. His work combines powerful “hands on” guidance and exploration with skillful verbal prompts and inquiry. I have benefited tremendously from my work with him, and highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in pursuing the Alexander Technique.
Joseph is a studious and attentive learner and teacher. He is always looking into new techniques to advance his practice and share with his students. One of the benefits or working with him is his "tool kit." He doesn't subscribe to a 'silver bullet' method, but balances multiple methods thoroughly and respectfully. You won't feel like you're hopping from one approach to the next without having truly explored any given option. Joseph's guidance helped me to minimize some pains, eliminate others, and form a practice that is helping me maintain music performance in a sustainable fashion.
Joe is professional, courteous, and super responsive in every aspect of his practice - from first meeting to hands-on work. He combines knowledge and intuition in a way that helped me become more aware of my patterns of holding and movement and gave me simple but powerful tools for me to access greater ease of movement in between sessions. I'll admit, Alexander Technique seemed a little weird to me at first, but the way it increases my power and range of motion in dance and athletics has been amazing!
Joseph is one of the most sensitive, intelligent, curious, present, and supportive teachers and human beings I know! He has helped me a great deal along my journey towards being a pain-free, whole, and open person. I would recommend him to anyone seeking to alleviate pain, and those who have the inclination there is more to to life than what typically meets the eye!
I’ve taken lessons with Joseph for quite a few years. I started out wanting to play the accordion with less tension and the lessons have turned into a life altering experience. What I’ve learned via Alexander Technique has affected pretty much every aspect of my life such as now playing the organ, chopping vegetables, relaxing at the dentist, sitting on the train, working in my garden, even when I’m just lying on my couch reading. Joseph is empathetic, thoughtful and listens carefully. I recommend him without reservations.
Joseph uses Alexander Technique to teach violin (and other instruments). With one lesson, I was able to play more comfortably and, as a result, has much better tone. It was pretty amazing.
