Dr. Chang has an exceptional background in Chinese Medicine, a synergy of intricate knowledge and extensive experience. With over 10 years of clinical experience, Dr. Chang is one of a handful of acupuncturists in the United States with a Doctorate Degree in Acupuncture. Dr. Chang holds a Bachelor of Science from Columbia University in New York City, a Master of Science from the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences and a Doctorate Degree in Acupuncture from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He is a Licensed Acupuncturist in New Jersey and New York and a licensed Doctor of Acupuncture in Rhode Island.
Most acupuncturists trained only in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which utilizes 12 meridians, whereas with Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) one utilizes all 74 pathways of the body. Having this knowledge and experience of all 74 pathways allows Dr. Chang to choose the most appropriate pathways to provide healing for the patient.
Dr. Chang had the privilege of learning Classical Chinese Medicine from his mentor and teacher Master Jeffrey Yuen, an 88th Generation Daoist Preist and Lineage Holder of the Yu Qing Huang Lao Pai (Jade Purity Yellow Emperor Lao Zi School). He is also trained in other Classical Chinese Medical modalities such as fire cupping, emotional releases, detoxification, dietary nutrition, and essential oils blends for adults and children. Dr. Chang strives to honor, uphold and cultivate himself as one of the members of the 89th Generation of Classical Chinese Medicine practitioners.
Before I pursued medicine, I embarked on a much more “traditional” career path. After graduating from Columbia University in New York City with a B.S. in Engineering and Management Systems, I worked for Ernst & Young, Thomson Financial, and other Wall Street firms. My previous work experience has been extremely beneficial as it has helped me to understand the unique pressures and stresses that many of my patients experience.
Then one day, I was involved in a horrific car accident which left me in a coma. Doctors informed my family that I had less than a 10% chance to survive. While I did eventually awaken, I was left completely immobile for three months and incurred severe injuries, including: 70-80% hearing loss in my right ear, loss of smell, severe migraines, and vertigo. Eventually the doctors here in the States said they’ve exhausted their options and could not help me anymore. Undeterred, I flew to Asia where I was treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine for several months. The results were nothing short of miraculous: my 70-80% hearing loss improved to a 15-20% loss (which eliminated the need for surgery), my migraines and vertigo were completely eliminated, and I was even able to jog again. If you saw me today your immediate thought would probably be, “Uh…What accident?”
After my recovery I returned to the daily grind of Wall Street, but was soon restless about my life. Surviving death was, quite literally, a “life changing” experience, and my goals and desires had changed. After much prayer and reflection, I decided to take a leap of faith and leave my business career to pursue a career in acupuncture and herbal medicine so that I could help people in the same way I was helped at my lowest point in life. I have not regretted the decision for a single day and am thankful that I am doing work that I love and that I know helps people.
God has also blessed me with an amazing wife and a beautiful daughter!
"Not only does Dr. Chang bring warmth to his patients, he takes the time to truly understand the issue(s) and explains, in great detail, how to appropriately treat the issue. I saw Dr. Chang for the first time a few days ago and left his office feeling a sense of peace and complete relaxation.
My visit was the first time receiving acupuncture and Dr. Chang thoroughly explained each step and continuously inquired about my comfort level. My entire experience was superb, from the moment of arriving in the office and seeing Dr. Chang himself cleaning and sanitizing surfaces, to the complimentary bottle water, to the treatment.
Dr. Chang is an encyclopedia of information regarding the human body, traditional Chinese medicine, and holistic approaches. I enjoyed the conversation just as much as the treatment.
I highly recommend Dr. Chang for any of your acupuncture needs." - Ashley S.
