After bouncing around various Tai Chi groups in Los Angeles for about two years, I had the good fortune to run into one of Gene's former students in late 2017, and began taking weekly private classes with Gene all throughout 2018. I could tell very quickly that he was the real deal. Unlike the many "Tai Chi for Health" teachers out there, who coax you to get through the form as quickly as possible by merely imitating what you see, Gene takes Tai Chi very seriously. Instead of learning the entire form at once, we approached it piece by piece, learning only a single move every week and practicing that until it was acceptable. While he will constantly remind you of every mistake and how it might be exploited by someone trying to attack you, he does so very patiently, giving you ample time to figure it out for yourself. I never felt pressured or annoyed. After all, Tai Chi is all about being as relaxed as possible. I consider myself very lucky to have met him and I am very grateful for receiving such high quality instruction. If you are serious about learning real Tai Chi, Gene is the man you want to see.

About me

My name is Gene Golden, and I’m the founder and owner of The Golden School of Tai Chi Ch’uan. I am located in Bellingham, Washington and I teach private and group classes in the Yang Style of T’ai Chi Ch’uan. My focus is on balancing the flow of the body’s internal energy or Chi for health and personal empowerment. Tai Chi Ch'uan is a relaxed form of moving meditation that helps reduce stress. It is also a martial art developing speed, power and one's self-defense ability. I believe it is the most humane of all martial arts because it is based on neutralizing and deflecting an attacker's force and returning the energy of the attack to its source. The goal of Tai Chi Ch'uan is a state of harmony and balance and to do no harm.

I began my study of Tai Chi Ch’uan in 1975 under the tutelage of Grand Master William C.C. Chen of New York City. In 1980, I opened The Golden School of Tai Chi Ch’uan in New Hampshire and Portland, Maine, where I taught until 1998. I relocated to the West Coast to Rancho Santa Margarita, California where I taught until moving to Bellingham, WA. Through the years, I have practiced and exchanged ideas with many practitioners of Tai Chi, such as Master T.T. Lang of Boston and Benjamin Lo of San Francisco. All of this experience has helped me further develop my skills and embrace my own path of harmony, continually cultivating my ability to adapt to the “What Is” in life.

My Philosophy of Care

Helping, healing and empowering others.
