Menopause and Massage
In ancient cultures menopause is considered a second spring and a time of honor. The typical "menopause symptoms" don't have to be accepted as "normal" This profound transition can be viewed and explored with curiosity: it is a time of reckoning, it is a time when your body is communicating with you intensely. If we can understand her language and assist her, we can thrive!
Importance of Stress Relief During Menopause - WHY?
I would like to offer an insight that made all the difference to me and helped me understand the best approach to help the shift in my body during menopause.
Menopause is blamed for many of the symptoms typically associated with this transition. Things like "hormonal changes", "physical symptoms", concerns for mental well being and heart health that affect overall quality of life for many women.
I used to know nothing about menopause since no true education exists in preparation, Even doctors seem to not understand this "mystery" and at best can prescribe more pills. I thought at this time, I will have no more hormones, since my period will stop and in essence my body will just become broken. You may feel this way right now?
I have good news for you! Even after menopause the body is still able to make hormones and you can help her!
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE LEVEL OF ORGANS DURING MENOPAUSE?
The shift that happens is once your ovaries retire, the adrenals take over the hormone production. They have been the backup organ during the childbearing years and now they come center stage. As you may have heard, the adrenals are crucial in stress management, besides they produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system and blood pressure. At the time of menopause the adrenals are suddenly tasked with more work (much like when your colleague gets sick and now you get to do their job as well as yours). For this reason,
SUPPORTING THE ADRENALS IS KEY during menopause
As a result, the more you are able to reduce your stress levels the more you relieve the adrenals, so they are free to make all those good, natural, endogenous hormones for you!
The whole list of symptoms like: mood swings, anxiety, and irritability., hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and fatigue, feelings of depression and anxiety are largely connected to stress and you have the power to make yourself feel so much better by some simple lifestyle and dietary changes. Some of the stress may be coming from long held trauma and chemical imbalances in the body for which you may need professional assistance depending on the severity.
As a trauma informed professional I would make referrals for you if needed and I also offer group and individual coaching sessions to support your health and empower you to help yourself, to connect with yourself deeply and find your most authentic answers from within.
For all of us self care becomes more essential than ever at the time of menopause and massage is a wonderful way to unwind.
Why Massage is a Great Option
1. **Relaxation Response**: Massage therapy promotes relaxation, reducing levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and increasing serotonin and dopamine, which enhance mood.
2. **Muscle Tension Relief**: Many women experience muscle tension and pain during menopause. Massage can relieve physical discomfort, improving mobility and comfort.
3. **Improved Sleep**: Regular massage can promote better sleep quality by reducing stress and anxiety, making it easier to manage insomnia often experienced during menopause.
4. **Enhanced Circulation**: Massage improves blood flow, which can help alleviate some menopause symptoms, like hot flashes and fatigue.
5. **Personal Time**: Taking time for self-care through massage provides an essential opportunity for women to focus on their mental and emotional health, fostering a sense of empowerment and well-being.
Incorporating massage therapy into a stress relief routine during menopause can significantly enhance overall quality of life, helping women navigate this transition more comfortably and confidently.
