Leaky gut is a relatively new term in the medical vernacular. Basically, it's when the gut wall becomes inflamed and the thin inside lining of the digestive tract becomes porous and leaky, allowing tiny particles of undigested food seep out through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
These particles are not supposed to be outside of the intestinal walls, so this sets off an immune reaction to handle the toxic overload. But the immune system cannot possibly accomplish the enormous task of handling this volume of toxins and it eventually gets worn out, tired and confused. Worse, it turns against itself and thus begins an autoimmune reaction where the body turns against itself and begins to attach it's own organs.
Why would the body do this to itself? Because, as the tiny, toxic particles keep getting through the leaks in the gut, they eventually make their way to the organs, brain nervous system and lymphatic system where they attach themselves. These organs act like filters which harbor the toxins. Eventually the toxins build up over time until the immune system attacks the organs, leading to a full blown autoimmune reaction or cancer.
Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAP Syndrome or GAPS) is a condition which establishes a connection between the functions of the digestive system and the brain.
The term Gut and Psychology Syndrome was created by Dr Natasha Campbell–McBride, MD, MMedSci (neurology), MMedSci (human nutrition) in 2004 after working with hundreds of children and adults with neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD⁄ADD), schizophrenia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, obsessive –compulsive disorder, bi-polar disorder and other neuro-psychological and psychiatric problems.
Did you or your child experience any of the following:
- normal development in the first year of life, and then in the second year became autistic, hyperactive, defiant, oppositional, aggressive, obsessive, compulsive or developed other abnormal behaviours?
- colic, loose stools, constipation, eczema, asthma, ear infections or chest infections treated with antibiotics?
- digestive problems and allergies, was a fussy eater, then in late teens become anorexic or bulimic?
- suffer from tummy aches, dyslexia, dyspraxia, was anaemic or vegetarian, and then developed psychotic episodes and was diagnosed with schizophrenia?
- urinary infections or acne, treated with numerous courses of antibiotics, and then developed bloating, abdominal pain and was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?
- Failure To Thrive?
- colds and infections, and then developed an OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)?
- food allergies or intolerances, painful or irregular menstruations accompanied by migraines, and then developed depression?
- chronic cystitis (bladder infections), mood swings, anxiety, poor memory, difficulties to concentrate, narcolepsy, are underweight and just cannot put any weight on?
- Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or any other digestive disorder?
If any of these situations apply to you or your family then you have come to the right place! You need to learn about the GAPS™ Nutritional Protocol to heal your digestive tract and nervous system. I highly recommend the work of Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride, Author of GAPS™ Gut and Psychology Syndrome, Natural Treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Depression, Schizophrenia. She is a pioneer in this area and an expert in healing the digestive tract. Her book has helped millions of people heal their leaky gut.
The most irritating foods on the digestive tract are those high in processed carbohydrates, particularly grains and sugars. These foods turn to glucose in the body which feeds the pathogenic bacteria in the digestive tract while diminishing the population of beneficial bacteria. This is what causes inflammation of the gut lining.
